Head of Trade (Line Management)

Our client is a well known Shipping Brand. Currently they are looking for a well qualified candidate to join them as ” Head of Trade (Line Management)(P & L Responsibilities) “.

This role reports to General Manager.

In this role, your key responsibilities will involve the following areas :

  • Full P&L Responsibility
  • Select ships with optimal intake relative to volume prospects
  • Select a ship with optimal speed and bunker consumption
  • Close monitoring of daily vessel speed resulting in bunker consumption and cross check against other sister ships previously operated in the trade or region
  • Secure each port call berth window and negotiate terminal related contracts including discount, rebates and volume incentives
  • Manage and resolve claims (cargo claims, container damage, vessel damage) in consultation with the legal team when required
  • Strategize trade routes (existing and new) by understanding the demand & supply conditions of the prevailing market
  • Collaborate closely with the marketing department to consolidate customer demand, including anticipating forward demand because of seasonality or any potential changes
  • Acquire, compile, and maintain trade statistics and reports via company’s business intelligence portal for analysis and decision-making
  • Understand competitors and the prevailing market tonnage deployed on the trade lane
  • Awareness of operating conditions in terms of tonnage over or under supply
  • Carve out a differentiated product or increase sailing frequency by expanding existing service coverage, either via own deployment or slot swaps with another operators
  • Maintain a high standard of vessel schedule integrity and providing customers with clear and timely vessel updates on actual ETA & ETD
  • Manage space and select cargo that delivers the best yield
  • Create a portfolio outlining how slots should be utilized with structured deals vs. open slots
  • Work closely with the marketing team for customer and deals selections
  • Play an active role during customer’s tender exercises
  • Look for opportunities to implement GRI‘s (general rate increase), RR‘s (rate restoration), CBR (critical bunker recovery) for all trades managed in line with cost increases
  • Manage and coordinate rate quotation and filing with the marketing department
  • Manage all agencies involved in his/her service rotation regarding vessel operations, cargo bookings, and customer relationship management in each local location
  • Play an active marketing role, especially towards key clients brought in by the marketing team. In times of operational crises, dealing directly with key clients, especially those with structured space contracts with company
  • Stay attuned to market trends through active participation in business travel and events to establish and maintain strong relationships with key clients both locally and internationally
  • Provide support to your overseas local agent to ensure seamless operations and client satisfaction
  • Ability to spot and maneuver ships to achieve optimal deployment and/or switching vessel to recover schedule
  • Overview of all views speed/consumptions
  • Anticipation of weather & port delays
  • Overview of terminal and port efficiency
  • Vessel selection and charter related overview including period and ships design & peculiarity
  • Oversee Scrubber and Bunker supply
  • Ability to spot performance gaps across services within the same trade cluster
  • Conduct various feasibility/costing studies
  • Ability to drive marketing plan from a pan-Asia trade lens & effectiveness in getting all marketing colleagues to be on sight 
  • Overview of Customer diversification and the related deals including duration spread
  • Anticipation of seasonal demand and long festive break that warrants voyage suspension and/or port omission 
  • Terminal and Port related deals & contract negotiation
  • Overview of general trade demand and supply.  Coordinate and/or collaborate with competitor or fellow operator to control tonnage supply 
  • Set general pricing policy align with the prevailing market conditions
  • Fronting of core customers
  • Ability to engage in network planning for the core trades and being the lead in a consortium setup. Slot swaps for network outreach
  • 3rd party service P&L and conduct periodic review on the effectiveness of swap related services
  • Constantly review the viability of the existing trades routes and make suitable changes to improve efficiency or adapt to changes in the operating environment
  • Conduct feasibility studies to start new services, either solo or by forming a consortium via a vessel sharing agreement
  • Explore new business opportunities 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Maritime Business or Business Management
  • Ideally  10 or more years experience in shipping line involving in trade
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with colleagues across departments and various internal & external stakeholders
  • Able to travel overseas as part of business requirements
  • Independent and result oriented
  • Strategic thinker
  • Ability to focus on tasks and analyses situations, systems, and problems
  • Ability to make quick decisions supported by information and data gathered
  • Able to work in fast paced and dynamic environment
  • Strong and leadership
  • Proficiency in the English language, both verbal and written
